Walkbase Names Location Tech Veteran Kevin Hunter To Head U.S. Efforts

The Finland-based IoT analytics and marketing platform Walkbase is ready to enter the U.S. marketplace.

As the U.S. landscape for proximity marketing continues to advance rapidly,  Finnish indoor analytics provider Walkbase has hired former Gimbal and inMarket exec Kevin Hunter to steer its entry into the country.

A widely respected executive who holds 23 patents in the mobile and location space, Hunter co-founded geomarketing platform Gimbal. Hunter was charged with guiding the company from its incubation within Qualcomm Labs through its spin off as a private entity in May 2014. Hunter started with Qualcomm in 2006.

“My role is to expand and build out the Walkbase operations and organization to accelerate adoption of the Walkbase platform in the US market in order to capture the strong demand we are seeing from US based retailers, venues and partners,” Hunter told GeoMarketing.

Global Expansion Plans

Six-year-old Walkbase has primarily concentrated its efforts Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The company primarily relies on tracking and connecting marketing messages with consumers over the wifi systems operated in airports, malls, and retail stores. Unlike many of its rivals in the space, Walkbase strides a proximity-tech agnostic path by also connecting with Bluetooth systems and signals from cameras for its indoor targeting.

As part of its move beyond Europe, Walkbase recently announced a global partnership with IBM that includes a U.S. presence.

“In order to continue that growth, we recognized the need to expand our operations in the United States and Kevin was the ideal candidate given his extensive knowledge of not only the mobile proximity space but his relationships with key future partners,” said Walkbase CEO Tuomas Wuoti, in a statement.

“Walkbase is leading the way with their innovative and highly differentiated venue IoT analytics platform that is unlike any other currently available in the marketplace, and I am excited to join the team and deliver a solution to the industry’s demand for greater digital-style insights in their physical locations,”  Hunter added. “Our platform has a proven ROI and successful track record in markets worldwide and we believe the time is right to introduce Walkbase to U.S.-based brands, retailers and venues.”
